SQL Server 2005 introduces a uniform caching framework that implements a clock algorithm. Currently, it uses two timers or clock hands an internal clock hand and an external clock hand. The internal clock hand controls the size of a cache relative to other caches. It starts moving when the framework predicts that the cache is about to reach its upper limit. The external clock hand starts to move when SQL Server as a whole is experiencing memory pressure. Movement of the external clock hand can be caused by external memory pressure, internal memory pressure, or both. Information about clock hand movements is exposed through the sys.dm_os_memory_cache_clock_hands DMV as shown in the following code:

Once you have enabled demand-dial routing, you can launch the Demand-Dial Interface Wizard by right-clicking the Network Interfaces node in the Routing And Remote Access console tree and then clicking New Demand-Dial Interface. The wizard allows you to configure the basic features of the interface. After the basic demand-dial interface has been created, you can configure and manage its properties in a more detailed way in the Routing And Remote Access console. Demand-dial interface management in the Routing And Remote Access console can be divided into four areas: shortcut menu commands, network interface properties, port and device properties, and IP routing interface features.

The shortcut menu commands for each demand-dial interface are those that appear when you right-click the interface in the details pane of the Routing And Remote Access console. The interfaces themselves appear in the details pane when you select the Network Interfaces node in the Routing And Remote Access console tree. (See Fig ure 9-20.) Note that in addition to the management features listed below, this shortcut menu allows you to connect/disconnect and enable/disable the demand-dial interface.

The following list describes the four commands that are unique to the demand-dial interface shortcut menu:

Set Credentials Allows you to configure the user name and password that the interface uses when it connects to a remote router. Unreachability Reason cessful. Explains why the last connection attempt was unsuc

Set IP Demand-Dial Filters Allows you to limit the type of traffic that initiates a demand-dial connection through this interface. Connections can be limited (fil tered) by source address, destination address, and protocol. Dial-Out Hours Allows you to restrict the number of hours that the demand-dial interface can be used.

When the Network Interfaces node is selected, you can configure these settings in the properties dialog box of the demand-dial interface. The dialog box consists of the four tabs described in the following sections. General Tab This tab allows you to adjust modem features and to set the primary phone number associated with the demand-dial interface. You can use the Alternates button when editing the properties of a dial-up connection to configure a list of alter nate phone numbers for the interface to call in case one is unreachable. You can also choose to adjust the alternate list automatically so that numbers successfully reached are given higher priority.

This tab is shown in Figure 9-21.

Each cache entry has a separate row for the internal and external clock hand. If you see increasing rounds_count and removed_all_rounds_count when an instance is running, data cache is under internal or external memory pressure.

Notice that the first command-line parameter passed to the application is ultimately copied into the buf 10-character array. While the program runs, it stores information temporarily on the stack, including the return address where processing should con tinue after the subroutine has completed and the variable is passed to the subroutine. The application works fine when fewer than 10 characters are passed to it. However, passing more than 10 characters will result in a buffer overflow. Figure 1-2 shows that same application being deliberately attacked by providing input longer than 10 characters. When the line strcpy(buf, input); is run, the application attempts to store the string hello-aaaaaaaa0066ACB1 into the 10-character array named buf. Because the input is too long, the input overwrites the contents of other information on the stack, including the stored address that the program will use to return control to main(). After the subroutine finishes running, the processor returns to the address stored in the stack. Because it has been modified, execution begins at memory address 0x0066ACB1, where, presumably, the attacker has stored malicious code. This code will run with the same privilege as the original application. After all, the operating system thinks the application called the code.
